“Czy winna była konewka i czy Madonna może jeszcze coś uratować?
Pojawiają się: gigantyczny goryl, straszne ośmiornice, głowa kapusty wysadzająca w powietrze domy i dwa czołgi, krasnal ogrodowy, Madonna i blaszana konewka. Wszytko to podświetlone światłem w kolorze zimnego błękitu, a ze sprzętu nagłośnieniowego wydobywa się kolaż dźwiękowy muzyki: 1) z lat 60., 2) z lat 70., oraz 3) z lat 80., a także oryginalne dźwięki z filmów telewizyjnych. Stefan Beck & Patrick Huber życzą miłej zabawy.”
Tak zaczyna się tekst do katalogu, który Christoph Blase napisał w1989 r. o naszej instalacji Dziwne wydarzenia w ramach wystawy U stóp Herkulesa w Museum Fridericianum w Kassel. Była to nie tylko nasza pierwsza wystawa muzealna, ale także pierwsza wspólna praca artystyczna Becka i Hubera. Nie spodziewaliśmy się wtedy, że ten duet przetrwa całe 16 lat i zakończy się dopiero w 2004 r. wraz ze śmiercią Stefana Becka.
Podczas pisania tego tekstu dowiedziałem się, że Christoph Blase zmarł w 2022 r. – również o wiele za wcześnie. Czy winna była konewka, czy Madonna może jeszcze coś uratować?
„War die Gießkanne schuld und kann die Madonna noch etwas retten?
Es treten auf ein Riesengorilla, schreckliche Tintenfische, ein Häuser sprengender Kohlkopf und zwei Panzer, ferner ein Gartenzwerg, eine Madonna sowie eine Gießkanne aus Blech. Die Illumination erfolgt in kaltem Blau, als Beschallung gelangt eine Toncollage aus Musik 1. der sechziger, 2. der siebziger. und 3. der achtziger Jahre sowie Originalfernsehfilmton zu Gehör. Stefan Beck & Patrick Huber wünschen gute Unterhaltung…”
So beginnt der Katalogtext, den 1989 Christoph Blase zur Austellung Dem Herkules zu Füßen im Museum Fridericianum in Kassel, über unsere Installation Seltsame Ereignisse geschrieben hat. Diese war nicht nur unsere erste Museumsausstellung, sondern auch die erste gemeinsame künstlerische Arbeit von Beck/Huber überhaupt. Und dass dieses Duo ganze 16 Jahre bestehen und erst 2004 mit dem Tod von Stefan Beck enden würde, hatten wir damals nicht erwartet.
Während ich diesen Text schrieb, erfuhr ich, dass Christoph Blase 2022 – ebenfalls viel zu früh – gestorben ist. War die Gießkanne schuld oder kann die Madonna noch etwas retten?
“Was the watering can to blame and can Madonna still save something?
A giant gorilla, creepy octopuses, a cabbage head blowing up houses and two tanks, further on a garden gnome, Madonna and a tin watering can make their appearance. The illumination is in cold blue, the sound equipment is playing the collage of music: 1) from the 60s, 2) from the 70s. and 3) from the 80, as well as original TV film sound tracks. Stefan Beck & Patrick Huber wish you a good time.”
This is the initial fragment of the text about our installation Strange Events. written by Christoph Blase in 1989 for the catalogue of our exhibition At the Feet of Hercules at the Museum Fridericianum in Kassel. This was not only our first museum exhibition, but also the first joint artistic work by Beck&Huber. Little did we expect that this duo would last 16 years and only end in 2004 with the death of Stefan Beck.
While I was writing this text, I found out that Christoph Blase died in 2022 – also much too early. Was the watering can to blame and can Madonna still save something?
